The side effects of tramadol

There are a number of different painkillers around these days, one of which is the German produced drug known as tramadol. This is not a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) but is part of a family of drugs known as opiate agonists. These painkillers come in instant release and extended release formulas.

As is the case with other painkillers there are a number of possible side effects that are associated with tramadol. Although the drug is usually tolerated relatively well by most people there are some side effects that patients will need to be aware of, which includes:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Constipation
  • Vertigo
  • Diarrhoea
  • Itching
  • Increased perspiration
  • Dry mouth
  • Seizures (a rare side effect)

It is also important to remember that these painkillers can be habit forming and some people can experience adverse effects from withdrawal because they have become dependent upon it. It is important to ensure that your doctor gradually reduced the dose of this medication if you are planning to come off it, as otherwise withdrawal symptoms may manifest.

Another thing to bear in mind is that effects can stem from drug interaction, so you need to ensure that your doctor knows everything about any medication that you are using and your general health before you start taking these painkillers. If taken with certain other medications and substances tramadol can affect your breathing and central nervous system. You should avoid taking Tramadol wityh narcotic painkillers, sedatives, alcohol, or tranquilizers. You should also speak to your doctor before taking them if you are prone to addiction or have ever attempted suicide.

This medication should not be taken by pregnant women or those that are breastfeeding, as not enough data relating to safety in these circumstances has yet been established.
