Indonesia: Working to protect wildlife of Halmahera Island

On conservationist Tony Whitten’s second supervisory visit to the World Bank’s biodiversity project on the eastern Indonesian island of Halmahera, the team took a helicopter to the Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park to see some of the island’s biodiversity including giant cuckoos, enormous gingers and plenty of leeches. The project is executed by Burung Indonesia, and their team has already developed solid relationships with government, civil society and private entities to form a strong and informed constituency of concern for the protection of this new national park.
